Council workers paint around dead badger

Sometimes you hear about a news story that you really could not make up. This is such a news article.

Council workers for Hampshire Council were sent out to paint new double white lines in the centre of the A338 in Hampshire.

All was going well until they reached a dead badger in the middle of the road. It had apparently been there for over a week.

Now, instead of doing the sensible thing and moving it to the side of the road, they painted either side and left a gap where it was. They then carried on up the road, leaving the deceased mustelidae behind.

According to the Salisbury Journal, Councillor Mel Kendal, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for environment said:

We would usually liaise with our colleagues at the district council who dispose of animal carcasses on the highways to ensure the badger was removed before the white line painting crew did this stretch of road.

This appears not to have happened in this case and the white line painting crew did what they thought was best until arrangements could be made to dispose of the carcass.

These arrangements have now been made and the gap in the white lines will be filled in and at no extra cost to the council taxpayer.

What? So the workers for the County Council are incapable of using common sense and sweeping away thier own roadkill? It’s little wonder council tax bills are so hight if they need deply two teams to paint a line on a road. I’m also unclear about his claim that the gap in the lines as now been filled in at no extra cost to the tax payer – how come? Did he pay for the work himself? Or maybe the “jobsworth” crew should have it taken from their wages – because If it’s neither of these how else did the council pay for fuel to drive out there and wages for the work to be done?

UPDATE:  It seems the work was being carried out by contractor’s Amey. They said the staff from their sub-contractor Bellstan were not “licensed or trained” to remove road kill.

I think that just about sums up Britain these days. A fully workman has to have a waste handling licence and be trained in order to get a spade off his/her van and shovel the poor creature to the side of the road.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Singer Robbie Williams to rejoin Take That

It has been announced that Robbie Williams is to rejoin his former band members in the band Take That.

36 year old Williams split from the band in 1995 to launch a solo career. The Band then broke up in 1996. In 2005, the band announced they were to make a comeback and reform – without Williams.

Williams will now rejoin the band and record a new album which is to be released in November – just in time for Christmas.
