Manchester Evening News has a (very) slow news day

Just how much of a slow news day does it have to be for a regional newspaper which was established over 140 years ago to report a story about a 7 year old passing a phone to his mother?
No - seriously, I’m not making it up – that is exactly what the Manchester Evening News reported yesterday.
The article tells the story of how 7 year old “rescued” his mother when her thumb became trapped in an ironing board.
The article starts:
A boy came to his mum’s rescue when a bizarre accident left her trapped in an ironing board.
Michelle Thomas didn’t know what to do when her thumb got jammed in the board’s locking mechanism. The nurse, of Portland Walk, Macclesfield, was in danger of breaking her thumb as she struggled to work it free.
So, the heroic rescue seems to turn out to be the fact he passed his mum the phone. I would have thought most 7 year olds would be capable of doing this feat. Was it also not possible to pick up the ironing board.
The article continues:
But quick-thinking Alex, who is seven, passed her the telephone so she could call 999.
Michelle, 43, said: “I was hoovering and Alex called for me – I turned to talk to him and knocked the ironing board over.
“I went to grab it and caught it at a funny angle so my thumb got jammed up at one end.”
As a result of her 999 call, the fire brigade came out to free her from the ironing board – yes, that’s not a mistake - the fire brigade. I hope nobody had a real use for the emergency services during this time.
Seriously – even if you are in a fix like that, wouldn’t you use the telephone to call a friend or family member to pop round before dialing 999?
Come on Manchester Evening News, you can do better than this.
